Charlotte looked at the towel in her hand, but it was covered in greenish sputum. She reached for another towel and sat on the bed next to Mr. Bennet, the tears flowing freely this time. She held the cloth to his mouth as he struggled through his coughs. "Don't waste your energy teasing me, Mr. Bennet. Your marriage to Caroline Bingley is far better for Longbourn. She could bear you the heir that I will never be able to."

She had said it. She would never be able to give Longbourn an heir and the truth of her words struck her with a force she didn't expect. If Mr. Bennet did make Caroline Bingley his wife, it would be better for all involved. Charlotte would be relieved of the pressure to have a child. She and Mr. Collins could live happily in Kent for the rest of their lives and they would never have to return to Meryton. It was vitally important that Mr. Bennet live and the knowledge of that overtook Charlotte. She wept openly as she held the towel to his coughing mouth.
